Teaching children to read at Soudley.

Children come into Reception and begin learning to read through phonics.

At Soudley, we use Jolly Phonics and Read Write Inc. and children begin to be immersed in letter sounds (phonemes) and corresponding letter shapes (graphemes) immediately.

The children learn through lots of direct teaching, sound games, matching and repetition.

When children are ready, they move into other Read Write Inc. groups.

These groups continue to develop more complex phonemes, reading skills, comprehension skills and writing skills.

Where a child is having difficulty, we provide more catch up and intervention sessions.

The aim of the Read Write Inc. program, and indeed of the school, is that every child is reading fluently by the age of six.

It is having a significant impact on pupils’ reading and writing skills and our Phonic Screening outcomes.

You are more than welcome to see the Read Write Inc. sessions in action; they take place in most classes on Mondays to Thursdays between 9.45 and 10.30 (please call to confirm an exact time if you want to come along) .

A second reading program, Fresh Start, is provided for the older pupils who need continued help to develop their reading and comprehension skills.

When the children complete the program, their English curriculum continues through the Read Write Inc. ‘Get Spelling’ scheme, Reciprocal Reading (guided reading), Spelling Punctuation and Grammar sessions and writing lessons.
